How to Use Precedent Study in Architecture Design: Principles, Strategies, and Examples

These examples often come in the form of visual aides, and form vital parts of a projects foundation and overall concept, with many projects finding their initial starting points from one singular precedent.

precedent study

As listed below in the resources section, there are a few key places to find good precedents, however ultimately its just research, and relevant precedents can and will come from anywhere, and will always be bespoke to a particular project. They are rarely carried over from one to another.

The direction in which you analyze your precedent studies will be dependent on the nature of the precedent study itself, for example is it addressing the overall design concept, or is it a particular study into how access and circulation can be instigated and designed?

Collecting information and inspiration, has never been easier, gone are the days of scanning magazine and journal pages and collecting a vast quantities of back issues. Particularly with Pinterest, it has never been more simple to collect and build your own private libraries of resources and precedents.

An architecture precedent study can aid your design process from concept to final design. Note that precedents are not copied but used as an inspiration to your design. They are an idea or guide to a method that you are wishing to employ in your scheme.

The use of a precedent in design can lend authority to your design by associating your proposal to something else. A precedent can communicate a meaning to your design, whether as a form of dialogue to your client, the public, or for the designer.

You need to start by establishing the brief, and therefore understanding the problem. You are seeking guidance or inspiration in a certain area, so it is important you select suitable precedents for your design. It may be that you are designing a museum, for example, so exploring museum precedents, would lead you to discover the requirements, conditions and problems that a museum design might present.

Look for buildings you can actually visit, explore and experience rather than completely relying on the information you find on the internet or in books. To be able to visit a building, explore it, study the materials, the form etc, is quite different from reading about it in a book.

The precedent is there to help you resolve a design problem. Be it a suitable solar shading solution, or a cladding material, you need to drill down on what that particular precedent has taught you and why you feel it is an important inspiration for your design.

Take time to research and interpret the precedent building, and figure out how it is constructed and its significant features. Analyse the form, structure, using any photographs and drawings you have in order to start to fully understand all aspects of the building or segment that you are focusing on.

Remember that different precedents will offer different solutions and experiences. For example, a building that demonstrates a good floor plan, my not necessarily be the building you want to look at for employing advanced technologies in materials and design. This is where a combination of precedents, can help you develop ideas and solutions, by cherry picking information from each and weaving the concepts into your design.

It is important not to copy. Be specific in the area which you feel applies to your design, learn lessons from the precedent and find ways that you can be creative with its integration, and solving your design problems.

Continue to build your architectural vocabulary and you will slowly create a precedent study library in your mind that you can refer to again and again during your design process. Immerse yourself in architecture, and this will become easier. Critically assess designs you see, ask questions, be inquisitive.

Thank you Emma, your effort seems helpful and interesting ,I want to add some note on the concept and precedent studies, that is not always necessary to use architecture building as a case to study, but designer may use out side domain -if the project case need- from the nature for example, such as biology domain of knowledge to learn lessons (formal, relation ,accommodation with nature est). And after that to approach design through concept of transformation from other domain to architecture domain through reduction or metaphor.Regards.

The PRECEDENT Study lasts up to 14 weeks and includes up to 6 study visits and 1 telephone visit. You may invite a caregiver (also referred to as a study partner) to attend visits and help complete study activities. While this is not required for participation, it is recommended to give you additional support and insights about your condition.

Your participation in the PRECEDENT Study is completely voluntary. If you decide to participate in this research study, you are always free to withdraw at any time, for any reason, without any penalty or effect on your medical care.

Screening Period: The purpose of the Screening Period is to determine whether you meet the requirements to take part in the study. You (and your study partner, if you have one) will have 2 visits to the study office, where you will go through a set of interviews, answer questions about your health and symptoms, and have some assessments done. The study doctor will then review the results and determine your eligibility.

Study Treatment Period: If you qualify and decide to enroll in the study, you will take either the assigned investigational drug or a placebo every day for 12 weeks. A placebo is an inactive treatment that looks similar to the investigational drug but does not contain the active medication. You will also have 4 visits to the study office during this time and a telephone call. You (and your study partner) will complete various questionnaires and undergo tests to help the study doctor evaluate your health and symptoms.

Follow-up Period: After the Study Treatment Period, you (and your study partner) will come back to the study office for 1 follow-up visit 4 weeks after the Study Treatment Period ends.

Yes, your participation in any research study is completely voluntary. If you decide to participate in a research study, you are always free to withdraw at any time, for any reason, without any effect on your medical care.

A clinical research study, also called a trial, evaluates the safety and efficacy of an investigational drug to find out if it is better than, as good as, or no better than a placebo (which looks like the investigational drug but contains no active ingredients). It is only through the completion of research studies that the investigational drug can be evaluated and, if proven safe and effective, approved for use for the condition that was studied. Research studies are performed according to government regulations that help protect the safety and rights of the participants.

You could experience side effects associated with the investigational drug. There are also risks associated with some of the study procedures. Your symptoms may not improve or may get worse during the research study. The doctor or study staff will discuss all of the possible risks and potential benefits in detail with you.

Informed consent is the process of learning the key facts about a research study before you decide to participate. It is also a continuing process throughout the study to provide information to participants. To help you decide whether or not to participate, the doctors and nurses involved in the research study will explain the details of the study. The study team will then provide you with an informed consent form to read. The document includes details about the study, such as its purpose, duration, and required procedures. Risks and potential benefits are also explained in the informed consent form. After you have received and read the information about the research study, you will then decide whether or not to sign the document. No study-related procedures can take place before you have signed the informed consent form. The informed consent form is not a contract, and you may withdraw from the research study at any time.

The required research, drawings and models for the final review will be the result of a cumulative process and should represent the entirety of your understanding of and thoughts/analysis of the precedent you have studied. All research and diagrams should be formatted onto 1117 sheets throughout your process and revised for the final presentation as necessary. Think about consistency of presentation throughout the process.

Methods: The study population consisted of 255 patients who were randomized to 1 of 2 doses of intravenous nesiritide (0.015 or 0.03 microg/kg/min) or dobutamine (> or =5 microg/kg/min) and stratified by means of an earlier history of ventricular tachycardia. Patients were also assessed with 24 hour Holter recordings immediately before and during study drug therapy and by means of signs and symptoms of CHF.

The interdependent, yet often contentious relationship between city and campus is one that has guided campus organization and design since the dawn of the university. As a complement to the studio and technical methods courses in the Urban Design Graduate Research Group, this intellectual domain will begin by studying the evolution of the university, the idea of campus, and its connection to place.

Klick on this link to download the TEMPLATE for the layout of your precedents study. Use the assigned layout, letter font and seize. Apply the colors of the given keys to your diagrams and drawings. If there is a key missing add it to the list and set it up with your own color.

The first project of comprehensive studio was a group precedent study. Our group chose the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge, LA by Schwartz/Silver Architects and Eskew+Dumez+Ripple. The main objective of the research was the creation of 1:1 full scale detail drawings of important elements of the building. We were encouraged to understand the design concept of the building and look at how the details may or may not reinforce that idea. 2ff7e9595c
